Car Maintenance: How to Get Your Vehicle Ready for Summer

Mar 28, 2023 | auto repair

car maintenance

It’s summer, and it’s time for you to prepare your car for summer driving. It seems like spring sneaks up on us each year. When it does, it is time for you to think about this. We suddenly look up, and the thermometer hits triple digits. You need car maintenance right away.

The first 100-degree day can begin with long hot days, depending on where you live. It can be a difficult time for your car but there are ways you can help it get through this season.

Make sure you have an A/C system

Many auto repair shops offer free or very low-cost air conditioning inspections. Freon can leak out in winter. This will cause your compressor’s to overwork. Your battery is another inexpensive and easy thing to check. Heat can quickly destroy a weak battery, so it is worth checking it. Much cheaper to test it than to buy a new one when it fails.

Check Coolant Levels

Make sure your coolant is at the right level and that it is checked regularly. This can lead to severe problems and costly auto repairs.

Make sure you check your tires

Tires are another important thing. Hot roads can be tough on tires. This is why there is so much rubber on the highways. The glue that holds the tires together is what makes them brittle. We all know what happens if the glue is too hot.

You need to ensure you have enough tread. If you don’t, you should provide sufficient air pressure. The air pressures are usually located inside your driver’s door. You can’t see the tire pressures by simply looking at it. Get a gauge, or have your tire shop check the tire pressure. This could save your life or that of a loved one.

Replace Windshield Wiper Blades

Replace your windshield wiper blades if you haven’t done so in the last year. Wiper blades made from rubber will be damaged by heat. This can pose a safety risk during summer storms, but most people can fix it themselves.

Check belts and hoses

Make sure to inspect your belts, hoses, and undercarriage. They are more susceptible to heat and rubber products. Either have them professionally repaired, or you can inspect them yourself for small cracks and cuts. It is much cheaper to replace these while your car is still in operation than when it is stranded somewhere.

Top Off Fluids

Top off your fluids while you’re under the hood or when you have your car checked out by a certified technician. When the outside temperature rises, fluids are crucial. This preventative measure is an excellent way to ensure your car runs as it should.

Protect your car’s paint.

If you haven’t already, apply a wax coat to your paint. Although we don’t experience the same oxidation problems with color as before, wax can protect your factory finish and clearcoat. You should do this, especially if your car is frequently washed with automatic machines that can cause light scratches.

When getting your car ready in time for summer, an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. I can’t stress enough how unpleasant and unsafe it is to have your car break down in the middle of the road, even if it’s 100 degrees outside. You can prevent this by following the steps I have outlined.
